Come one, come all! The Chicago Moishe Houses are joining forces for the fourth annual Moishe House Purim Party of the year! Join us on Thursday March 5th at Joy District for a costume party of biblical proportion. Food & hamantaschen will be provided along with music, drinks, unlimited mitzvah and costumes!
What is Purim?
The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). Purim 2020 begins on Monday night, March 9 and continues through Tuesday, March 10, (March 11 in Jerusalem). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).
There is a spirit of liveliness and fun on Purim that is unparalleled on the Jewish calendar. If there were ever a day to “let loose” and just be Jewish, this is it! It is also customary for children (and adults, if they desire) to dress up in costumes. A traditional Purim food is hamantaschen (or oznay Haman), three-cornered pastries bursting with poppy seeds or another sweet filling.
