Survivors Speaking Out

September 13, 2022 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Survivors Speaking Out shalva chitribe

Whether in court, in the press, in art, or other spaces, when a survivor chooses to speak out about the abuse they have faced, there are many consequences they need to consider both legally and emotionally.

The Depp v. Heard case is the latest celebrity headline and it will have a lasting legacy for survivors. Join us to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse presented in this case.

Featured speakers:

Natalie Harris, JD, is a partner at Baron Harris Healey and a defamation defense specialist. She has litigated numerous defamation cases throughout Illinois and Wisconsin, invoking the First Amendment and combatting efforts to silence protected speech through weaponized litigation. She has handled cases on behalf of survivors and witnesses brought by perpetrators with the help of funding through the National Women’s Law Center and the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund.

Kimberly Shapps, JD, LCSW, ICDVP, EMDR, is a certified domestic violence counselor with SHALVA. She began her career as an attorney in the public interest sector, representing victims of domestic violence in civil proceedings and was the Clinic Legal Director at Pro Bono Advocates. She also worked as the Associate Director of Outreach at Neopolitan Lighthouse, where she developed and implemented a domestic violence outreach program educating community members on Chicago’s Westside.
