Should Justice Be Blind? : The Case of Boaz and Ruth

May 27, 2023 @ 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Should Justice Be Blind? : The Case of Boaz and Ruth
with Rav Will Friedman

According to the second chapter of Ruth, Boaz not only provides protection for Ruth while she collects food in his field, but also directs his workers to subtly provide her with extra food. Rabbinic law, however, expressly prohibits land owners from favoring one poor person over another when collecting draopped food in fields (leket)! So, did Boaz Break the law for Ruth? Or is favoritism for vulnerable outsiders the right thing to do?

In attempting to reconcile this contradiction, we will explore sources that go to the heart of the question whether doing good requires procedural even-handedness or close attentiveness to individual context and consequences, revealing that the Torah itself is fundamentally torn on the question of whether justice ought to be blind.
