- Lake Shore Drive Synagogue – Shomrei Israel
Shomrei Israel was founded in 1962 to answer a need for a traditional synagogue in the area. Starting out in a room above Eli’s Delicatessen on Oak Street, our founders relocated to our current address in the mid-1970s.Sometimes called the “Elm Street Shul” (because of our location on Elm Street), our congregation has grown considerably over the years but still retains the charm of a small, friendly, intimate shul.Located in the heart of Chicago’s Near North Side and a short walking distance from Michigan Avenue and the area’s hotels, our synagogue has attracted Jews from the Gold Coast and Streeterville neighborhoods as well as visitors from all corners of the world. Our members are of diverse backgrounds and of various levels of observance. Our unique style and the atmosphere of warmth and friendliness have earned us testimonials locally and worldwide. We offer services on Friday evenings, Saturday mornings and evenings, and Sunday and Wednesday mornings, as well as on all Jewish holidays. Our year round social and educational events and programs supplement our religious services. Of special note are our community Shabbat evening dinners and our Scholar-in-Residence Program.
