Let’s Meet Jewish Person Of The Week – Robin Richman

Where did you grow up?

Skokie, IL.

What did you do Jewish growing up?

I come from a very traditional family background.  I went to Jewish day school all my life. Hillel Torah for elementary school and Ida Crown for highschool

What do you do now?

I’m still fairly traditional. I keep kosher (to my own rules) and observe most of the Holidays. I am more about the traditions as I think that’s what has kept the Jewish people alive.

Where did you go to school?

Brandeis University

What do you do for work?

I own an adventure travel company -with Jewish singles as one of my largest divisions.  I also organize corporate retreats and trips, custom trips and organizational getaways.

What have you done throughout your career?

I started in public relations and marketing in Boston, where all my friends were very outdoorsy and adventurous.  When I moved back to Chicago, I couldn’t find anyone to play with. So I (and two others) started organizing small events like a weekend bike camping trip or cross country ski trip, and people kept showing up.  I was always a traveler and when I would come back from a trip, people would say that they wanted to join me next time I went.. so I started putting larger, more exotic trips together and we have a blast.

What is your favorite thing about traveling?

Meeting people with different backgrounds, traditions, foods, beliefs.  And then finding the similarities.  But ultimately, I love finding unique places and activities about a destination and creating a special experience for my trip participants.

What do you do for fun/to relax?

I love to hike, bike and cross country ski, but when I can’t, I head to the gym. I love a challenging work out.  I also love to gather with a bottle of wine, girlfriends and a fireplace.

What is your favorite Jewish Chicago Event?

The Israeli Film Festival!

What is your favorite way to spend Shabbat?

I love making Shabbat dinner and having people over.

Top three things on your Chicago bucket list?

  1.  Learn how to stand up paddle in Lake Michigan
  2. Get a group together for drinks in one of those heated clear domes
  3. Get to all the recently opened restaurants in the city.
