Practice a toolbox of creative challah shaping techniques, explore the themes of the High Holy Days from new angles, and then combine your learning into a unique challah that brings your own interpretation to the table for Shabbat or the High Holy Days! No previous challah experience or artistic skill required, only willing hands and an open mind. Note that this class will use pre-made challah dough.
A homemade challah is the beautiful and delicious centerpiece of the Shabbat or holiday table, and with a few new techniques in your hands, that challah can become a midrashic masterpiece as well! Rabbi Vanessa Harper (author of Loaves of Torah: Exploring the Jewish Year Through Challah, also known as @lechlechallah on Instagram) sees challah dough as an artistic medium for exploring Jewish text and tradition, and teaches her methodology and shaping skills to people of all ages and artistic abilities to empower them to bring beautiful Torah to their own tables. This class will include an introduction to creative bread shaping techniques, text study in preparation for the High Holy days, and an opportunity to create an interpretive challah to take home and bake. No previous challah experience or artistic skill required, only willing hands and an open mind.
