Special Evening with Nick Winton and Film Screening of One Life

September 29 @ 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Gather at the Museum to hear the true story of the man behind what became known as the Czech ‘Kindertransport’ program, Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, as portrayed in One Life, a film starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jonathan Pryce. There will be a post-film discussion led by Nick Winton, the son of Sir Nicholas Winton.

While visiting Prague in 1938, Nicky, a young London stockbroker, met families who had fled the Nazi regime in Germany and Austria as they rose to power. These families were living in desperate conditions, with little or no shelter and food, under imminent threat of Nazi invasion. He realized they were facing a race against time. In all, Nicky and his team orchestrated the rescue of 669 children in the months leading up to World War II.

Nicky’s courageousness remained unknown and unnoticed by the world for nearly fifty years. It was not until 1988 when he was invited to a live BBC television show, That’s Life!, that he was recognized for his humanitarian accomplishments – and reunited with a few of the (now adult) children he had saved, as well as many of their children and grandchildren.
