Sam & Gertie’s Hannukah Pop Up In Old Town
Soft Opening for Hannukah: 12/21-12/22
Introducing the newest Vegan Deli in the city! Sam & Gertie’s, named after Andy Kalish’s maternal grandparents, will feature a deli case filled with plant-based versions of traditional Jewish delicatessen items, including vegan smoked salmon, knishes, latkes, egg and tuna salads, as well as hot sandwiches filled with brisket and schmaltz.
The baked goods will rival those of most any bubbe’s: Mandelbrot, babka, rugelach, coffee cakes, black and white cookies, maybe a seven-layer cake and challah,” Andy Kalish told VegNews.
The shop will also sell a variety of bagels topped with schmears and cold smoked tomato-based lox, soups such as matzo ball and vegan chicken noodle, and a wide selection of dessert. The partners plan to use this deli to pay homage to Andy Kalish’s grandmother and culinary inspiration Gertie Stuart with their hearty, deli-style food that happens to be entirely vegan.
Grand Opening: January 9 2020
This is the next phase of Jewish food. Vegan meets Chicago Jewish.

Meet Sam and Gertie Stuart: The Inspiration for the New Jewish Vegan Deli in Uptown
Sam and Gertie had three children named Elaine, Herschel & Floreen. They had ten grandchildren, none are vegan, but one is Chef Andy Kalish.
Sam & Gertie’s is meant to be an homage to Andy’s grandparents. Sam and Gertie traveled to the USA as immigrants and had to cross borders and seas to finally find safety and build a life in America. They succeeded in their American Jewish dream and worked hard together and grew a family, celebrate Judaism, and always made good food.
