Simchat Torah Event Updates

To the entire Jewish Chicago Community: As we looked forward to coming together in celebration of Simchat Torah, recent developments in Israel may have many feeling the need to reshape their gatherings for tonight.

While Simchat Torah is a holiday full of joy and reverence for the Torah, it is understandable that many people and Jewish organizations may feel the current circumstances necessitate a more subdued evening of gathering and solidarity. ChiTribe remains committed to keeping you informed about the status and nature of tonight’s events and all Jewish community events.

“While we planned to throw a festive gathering tonight in honor of our love of Torah, our people and our traditions, that cannot simply go ahead as planned.  We will still gather tonight at 7:30 at (email ravezra@metrochicagohillel.org for the address) But the tone of tonight will need to reflect the moment we currently find ourselves in.

We will hold the hakafot and rituals in our backyard area, and we will have the inside space dedicated to a more quiet space for those that want to come together and be with others from our community–and the space can be for both regular shmoozing or more deliberate processing depending on what people need.

For the hakafot and rituals, we normally sing and dance and joyously celebrate the Torah.  Tonight, we will have a different kavanah.  “Had not your Torah been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction/לולי תורתך שעשועי אז אבדתי בעניי” (Psalms 119:92).  We will still hold our precious Torah’s role in our lives, but in a different sense.  Our circles will bring us together, hold us, our tears along with our joys. “
