(When) Can We Have Nice Things, and What Should We Do With Them? Sukkot and the Ethics of Abundance

Sukkot is a celebration of abundance: the completion of the harvest in ancient Israel, and of having received Divine forgiveness on Yom Kippur. Sukkot is also a celebration of vulnerability: dwelling in flimsy outdoor huts, uncertain as to whether enough rain will fall for next year’s harvest. Through textual exploration and conversation, we will ask how these themes relate to each other, and what they can teach us about how to respond to the situation we currently find ourselves in: a time of both overabundance and the looming threats to it.
